Tool Time Tuesday...Tile Dominoes, Great For Father's Day

You know I love roaming through hardware stores, mind ticking away, looking for new ideas. I was going through the tile aisle again and saw the same rectangle tiles I had at home. Just walking by them again helped me come up with today's project!

Dominoes!!!

Dominoes have a history in our family. My father was born in 1924...a child of the depression. He still tells the story about one Christmas was he was little. The only gift he received was a set of dominoes. They must have meant a lot to him, because he still talks about them 88 years later. You can imagine how many sets we have bought for him over the years!!

The 12" x 12" sheets of tile run from $3.00 - 10.00 a sheet. However, this sheet was $1.23 on clearance.

These are glass "like" and come in so many colors.

For dominoes, you will need 28 rectangle tiles. Mix your colors up if you have a multi colored sheet.

You can lightly mark the center of each tile before you apply the dividing line, but as I went along, I just free handed it.

I wanted to use up what I had around the house, so this is fabric paint that had a little dimension to it.

What I really liked about it was the fine point tip.

Here's my take on this project...Just GO FOR IT!!! Don't strive for perfection. There are too many lines and dots to worry about if they're straight, even or spaced equally.

Do all your middle lines first. You can let them dry, but I just went for it!!

You can also go on the internet and bring up pictures of sets dominoes to see the exact dots you need. You can also print the rules for different types of domino games.

This is a box I purchased in the candy making section of the craft store. It was left over from another project, but it fits the set of dominoes perfectly.

Don't forget to add your printed sheet of rules before you wrap it up!

Add a bow and you are all set for a Father's Day gift...or any holiday for that matter.

See the "perfect" imperfection in there? I think little mistakes and smudges add to the charm of a homemade gift...especially with game pieces.

If you buy the tiles on clearance or at least a great price, you can make so many sets of Dominoes very inexpensively. You will get 2 sets of Dominoes per sheet of tile. (66 tiles per sheet) You need 28 per game.

• party favors
• game night at home
• class room games to learn numbers and matching

Tool Time Tuesday...Tile For Labels

Happy Tuesday everyone. If you've read any part of my blog, you know I love to organize and label everything. When I see those organizing boxes or containers in the store, I love the little metal plates or frames that hold the label for what's in the box.

However, I usually make my boxes or containers from recycled things...I still like them to be labeled though. You can buy those little frames, but they are expensive.

Here's my solution!! TILE...I found this sheet of glass like tile in the clearance section for a $1.23 at Home Depot. However, the regular price is $4.97. Not bad either way for 66 tiles. ( you just counted didn't you? Lol )

These are rectangle...perfect for making labels. I also bought the square version of these a while back. CLICK HERE for the post on how to make magnets out of them.

Aren't these pretty...very glossy and shiny. They come in a ton of colors and textures too.

The tiles come on a mesh backing of one square foot...when you are using it for tiling. However, we are crafting here!!

Just pop those babies right off that mesh.

and now you see pretty tile labels!!

They are also great for writing your own with a marker. Wipes right off if you want to change it.

The type of glue depends on the surface you are gluing the tile to. You can use hot glue, Gorilla Glue, E6000 etc.

Let's see how we can use these.

Labeling fresh herbs...

Nail polish bin for my daughters...actual nails and screws for me!! Just add a little hammer.

Makes those cheap plastic bins a little cuter.

How about your pantry...label food, snacks and baking ingredients.

and this one is my favorite...magazine holder tile.

Remember I made these out of old cereal boxes? Painted the sides black and Mod Podged a strip of fabric on the front.

You can also add the handle to the box too. You know I love my pipe straps for handles.

These are pipe straps found in the electrical section. They hold up conduit pipe on walls or ceilings. I use them for handles on everything. Very cheap. I think 10-12 for $2.75.

Take a trip down the tile isle...it's fabulous, especially if you're only buying one sheet verses 400 square feet of it!!

Tool Time Tuesday...Mosaic Tile Magnets

Happy Tuesday everyone! We're off to the hardware store again...in the tile department! Today we're making glass magnets, but I'll have other projects with these tiles, so stay tuned this week or next week. I think these would be great for jewelry too...but I have to experiment first!

Mosaic tiles come in different sizes and styles. These tiles are glass or at least they look like glass to me. They are clear, with a backing on it that has the color that shines through to the front.

The tile comes in sheets that are 12 inches by 12 inches. These tiles can cost any where from $4.00 on up. I paid $4.00 for one and $8.00 for another.

However, if you take into consideration that there are 144 small tiles on each sheet, the cost for each tile is 3-5 cents a piece. Now that's a great price!!

Here's a close up...they are so shiny and smooth.

Here is a close up the blue gray tiles.

All the tiles are on a mesh backing to keep it in one piece. It's easier to place the tile on your kitchen back splash or in the bathroom in one large tile verses one by one.

However, we're crafting...not tiling the kitchen, so pluck those tiles off that mesh and let's get started!

Each little tile is about 7/8 of an inch square. Perfect for so many projects.

Here's what you'll need to make the tile magnets.

• tiles
• magnets dots found in any craft store
• glue...I used E 6000. Really bonds to tile. Hot glue pops off.

 This is the glue and the magnets that I used.

Simply glue one magnet to the back of each tile and let dry. DONE!!!

Use the magnets on any metal surface. They'll hold up messages, love notes, reminders, report cards, pictures, patterns, instructions etc...

Great for your refrigerator too.

A whole set of these would make great gifts too. Just package them up in cute little baggies with your children's school pictures or a special  message and the pictures are ready to go up on the refrigerator with a very pretty magnet.
